A parent’s prescription has run out on a weekend
It is Saturday afternoon, the bottle is empty, and the doctor’s office is closed until Monday. What to do depends on which medicine it is, and the person who knows is the pharmacist.

Call the pharmacy first, not the doctor
Pharmacists can often provide an emergency supply of a regular medicine when a prescription has lapsed, enough to bridge to Monday. What they are allowed to do varies by state and by medicine, and controlled medicines are generally excluded, but they will tell you straight away what is possible. Have the empty bottle in your hand when you call: the name, the dose, the prescriber and the prescription number are all on the label.
If the pharmacy cannot
- The doctor’s office usually has an after-hours or on-call line, even when the office is closed — the recorded message will say
- An urgent care clinic or a telehealth visit can often write a short prescription to cover the gap
- Bring or photograph the bottle; nobody can prescribe from a description of a small white tablet
Which medicines cannot wait
Anything for the heart, blood pressure, seizures, diabetes, blood thinning or breathing is not a wait-until-Monday medicine, and neither is anything the label says must not be stopped suddenly. Ask the pharmacist or the on-call doctor the same day. Do not take a double dose the next day to catch up unless told to. If your parent becomes unwell in the meantime, call emergency services rather than waiting to be sure.
So it does not happen again
- Set the reorder reminder a week before the last tablet, not on the day
- Ask the pharmacy to synchronise refills and put the regular ones on automatic refill
- One named person reorders, and writes down when they did
- Ask the pharmacist whether a few days’ buffer supply is appropriate — that is their call to make, not something to arrange by ordering early
